About this Course
This is a management level course that investigates into effective ways on the prevention and management of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. It is a challenging and interesting course for healthcare practitioners, particularly those in sexual health.
This course carries 135 academic credits. The course is studied and assessed at level 4/5 of the UK qualifications scale.
Introduction
Every day, over 6,800 persons become infected with HIV and over 5,700 persons die from AIDS, mostly because of inadequate access to HIV information, prevention and treatment services. The HIV pandemic remains the most serious of infectious disease challenges to public health. Nonetheless, the current epidemiologic assessment has encouraging elements since it suggests: the global creation of awareness, education and support to those infected and affected is urgent. This diploma course provides information, skills and strategies on how HIV/AIDS can be prevented and effective counselling methods that individuals, families and organisations can use to provide care and support to those infected and affected.
Aims of the Course
This course will enable candidates to:
To equip students who come on the course with the knowledge and skills which they require to participate fully and effectively in the prevention and management of HIV/AIDS and STIs.
Students will examine practical issues people living with HIV/AIDS and STIs face and identify coping strategies to help them live useful and productive lives.
To build the capacity of students to effectively develop prevention and management projects in the areas HIV/AIDS and STI and be introduced to effective project management and project sustainability.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:-
- Develop and implement HIV prevention strategies
- Provide counselling to people living with HIV
- Implement HIV prevention strategies at the workplace
- Management an HIV prevention project team
- Produce management reports on HIV/AIDS and STI prevention
Target Audience
This is an advanced programme that trains participants to achieve skills at management level. Thus, the course is suitable for people who are already working in (or intending to work in) the healthcare sector or related professions, such as charities, government bodies, civil society organisations, faith based organisations, local authorities and other non-profit-making organisations as well as business. It is in particular, suitable for those people who are already working or intend to work as:- doctors, nurses, social workers, welfare officers, humanitarian personnel, public health officers and government workers. Students will also benefit from work experience with relevant organisations in the UK.

Year 1
Module 1 – HIV/AIDS Prevention and Management 1 (15 credits)
Module 2 – Sexually Transmitted Infections Control and Management (15 credits)
Module 3 – HIV/AIDS Management (15 credits)
Module 4 – HIV/AIDS PROJECT Management, (15 credits)
Module 5 – Economics and Management (15 credits)
Module 6 – Research Methods HIV/AIDS (15 credits)
Year 2
Module 7– Field Practice (15 credits)
Module 8 – Research Project HIV/AIDS (30 credits)
Assessment
Assessment is by way of continuous essays and written assignments, group work, presentations and research project.

Year 1: £3,500
Year 2: £2,500 + £250 Research Project Fee
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have:-
1. Passes at GCSE at A/Level or equivalent standard; or
2. Completed a recognised certificate or diploma course in any field; or
3. Worked in a related field for 3 years or more; or
4. Not met the requirements above, but are at least 21 years of age (at the discretion of the College);
English Language Requirements
You must show competence in spoken and written English, in addition to meeting the entry requirements above. International students must demonstrate competence of the English Language at IELTS 6.0
